The 2018 World Beer Cup, also known as the “Olympics of Beer”, took place this year in during with the annual Craft Brewers Conference (CBC). Introduced in 1996 by the Brewers Association (BA), The World Beer Cup is held every other year during CBC, the 2018 edition of this event was held at Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The World Beer Cup is considered the largest international gathering of beers with more than “8,234 entries (this year) from 2,515 breweries and representing 66 countries“.

The beers were judged over a three day period by a panel of 295 judges, hailing from 33 countries. 72 percent of the judges reside outside of the United States. The Brewers Association noted, “out of a possible 303 awards in 101 beer style categories, 302 were awarded. One gold award was not given in Category 36, International-Style Pilsener”.  Within each of the 101 categories to be judged, the average number of beers entered was 82.

“Beer brings people together,” said Charlie Papazian, founder and past president, Brewers Association. “The World Beer Cup showcases the breadth of the global brewing community and winning an award symbolizes one of the greatest brewing achievements. Congratulations to all the winners on this remarkable accomplishment.”

We know our clients stay busy year-round crafting new and complex recipes for the enjoyment of everyone (winning a few awards is always nice too). We here at VicinityBrew Software are proud to showcase our clients winning brews from the 2018 World Beer Cup.

The Baroness Bourbon Barrel Stout

world beer cup

ABV: 8.5% | IBU: 45 | SRM: 50

2018 Winning Category: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout – Silver Award

Description: Bertha von Suttner, the first female to win a Nobel Peace Prize, took bold steps with a calm spirit. That’s exactly what The Baroness achieves by aging our traditional Bertha Oatmeal Stout in bourbon barrels – a smooth and spicy brew for every lord and lady. The bourbon character is present, but balanced by a richness from the malt and oats. Cherry and vanilla swarm the palate complementing an oaky finish. We wanted to make a beer that was moderate in ABV and full of flavor. This beer aged for over a year as we moved from our old brewery, to our new facility. We then blended, to taste, the barrel aged version with fresh beer from our new brewery. We hope with every sip you can experience the story we are trying to tell. Cheers.
